Notes on Material Detail
Detail is where a public work is won or lost. A strong idea can be undone by a clumsy edge, and a quiet piece can be lifted by an edge that is exactly right.
Much of the studio time goes into the parts most people never consciously notice: how an inlay meets its ground, how a perforated screen throws its shadow, how a carved stone sits on the circle beneath it. These are worked out in samples and mock-ups before anything is committed at full scale.
The record kept here, the ledger, is partly about that. Each entry notes the material, the place and the intent, so the thinking behind the surface is not lost once the work is finished and handed over.
